Let’s get real for a second: we’ve been lied to our whole lives about our cycle. Our menstrual cycles are NOT supposed to be full of pain, anxiety, and stress. We’re having these issues because of our toxic environment and our nutritional issues that are creating chaos internally!

I wrote up my mega post a few years ago about how to have a happy healthy period if you want to check out ALL about how to heal issues with your cycle. But this post is just going to be a short breakdown on some things that can help specific symptoms you deal with during your cycle.

Natural Remedies for your Period Issues

Red Raspberry Leaf is the best herb for women’s health!

One of the *best* herbs for hormonal health for women is red raspberry leaf.  This herb is nothing short of miraculous for PMS, copper balancing, and overall hormonal healing.  It can help symptoms like anxiety, mood swings, insomnia, and even cramps! Red raspberry leaf is packed with nutrients: magnesium, manganese, iron, vitamin C, b-vitamins and potassium.

For tea, you can just use a good brand like Traditional Medicinals and have 1-2 cups a day as needed.

For infusions: I put 1 cup of dried red raspberry leaf in a quart of hot water and let it steep for at least 4 hours. Strain the liquid and drink this through the day. Store the liquid in the fridge when done and consume 1-2 cups daily, or more when pregnant or about to start your period!

Usually starting the tea or infusion 3 or 4 days before your cycle starts and then continuing until your 2nd or 3rd day of your cycle is ideal for the best benefit. This can be helpful for those that get symptoms at ovulation as well.

Dandelion root

Dandelion root tea is honestly the first remedy I go for when my ladies have cycle issues. Dandelion’s most common use is for liver health. This herb is especially amazing for the liver since it not only protects the liver, it also helps rebuild it.  Dandelion helps stimulate bile flow in the liver, which is an important factor for people trying to regain their health and detox effectively.

Dandelion can help with symptoms like cramps, anxiety, constipation, and it can even help with reduce acne breakouts that tend to happen before our cycles start. We love tea the best! You can use 1-2 teabags of Traditional Medicinals dandelion root tea, steeped in 8-16 ounces of hot water for 15-20 minutes. Add blackstrap molasses for a bit of sweetness and mineral content (especially potassium and iron) and a splash of whatever milk you might use and it’ll taste realllly delicious.

Liver Life and Before/After the Flow from BioRay

BioRay is SERIOUSLY amazing. I can’t rave enough about them. They just really know how to make good products. Liver Life is the BEST tincture I’ve ever found for liver healing- it’s the strongest one out there. If you read my whole post on healing cycle issues, you’ll see the importance of liver healing for reducing and healing issues with our hormones.

BioRay also has Before the Flow and After the Flow tinctures available for specific cycle issues. You can use 1 or both of them, depending on your specific concerns. You can read more about these here so you can see which one would be best for you: Before the Flow and After the Flow. Both focus on nourishing the body, restoring the adrenals, and they can help with holding onto specific nutrients better (that we tend to lose during menstruation).

If you order directly from BioRay’s site here, you can also use the code SASSY to save 10% off your whole order.

Lymph Lovers (for tender breasts!)

If you get sore breasts with your cycle, this is a HUGE sign of a sluggish lymph system. Rebounding, castor oil packs, nettle infusions, red root, massage, gentle walks or yoga- these are all some great helpers for lymph love. Read more about the lymph here.

Switch up your sanitary products

Most of the popular brands of tampons and pads are pretty toxic. They often have toxic chemicals like chlorine or glyphosate in them- and you use these things in one of the most sensitive areas of your body! Clean it up by choosing brands that are organic or at least chlorine free.

Things like mama cloth (or reusable pads, like these that you can find on etsy!) are popular these days too and are much more Eco-friendly. Many people are raving about menstrual cups as well, but I’m not convinced of their long term safety- knowing that silicone can indeed leach into the lymph system makes me weary of these things. We all have to do what works though- just stay away from the popular brands for things like pads and tampons!
