My Top 10 Nutrition Tips for Sassy Health

My Top Nutrition Tips

Everyone out there has their own version of “perfect health tips”- I like to keep mine as simple as possible. Too much stress is obviously harmful for our health, so it’s okay to not be perfect with your lifestyle. We all have to do the best we can. These tips are just my favorite things to keep in mind.

1) There is no “perfect” diet

We all have had different habits growing up which determines where exactly our health is at this moment.  There are so many variables in our environments that can effect us.  Learning how to ge tyour body back into balance is an extremely personalized experience. There actually was just a  study done proving that there is no such thing as a perfect diet because everyone has different biochemistry.

When it comes to diet just try to keep in mind that a whole-foods diet is best. Cut down on the junk food and try to focus on real foods. That is it! Some people may need more of a certain food, some may have an intolerance to other foods, and some people just have down-right hatred for some foods! Find what works best for YOU.

2) Organic is Best to help reduce toxin exposure

The “organic” label doesn’t mean much nowadays but as far as produce goes, organic is best.  With foods such as dairy and other packaged foods, even organic products can have synthetic vitamins added which proves that it cannot be 100% organic. Check out the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” lists here.

3) GMOs should be avoided.

While organic is usually important, the best thing to do is at least avoid genetically modified foods.  There are no long term studies on their safety and there is a lot of evidence that they are extremely harmful.  (this site has a comprehensive list of foods that contain GMOs).

4) Gluten-intolerant or just poison-intolerant?

There is a lot of information out that gluten-intolerance is really just a reaction to the pesticide glyphosate that is sprayed on wheat crops before harvesting.  Glyphosate is a mineral chelator- it binds with essential minerals (like magnesium and zinc) and sweeps them out of the body.  We need minerals for digestion so the glyposate can actually cause us to become gluten intolerant.  If gluten is an issue for you, it might be worth it to look into Einkorn wheat. It is ancient wheat, and it has 1/3 of the gluten content and 40% more nutrients than conventional wheat.

5) Nutrition is more important than exercise

Now I’m not saying that sitting on your couch all day is ok as long as you are snacking on carrots!  Exercise is still important but if you don’t have the proper nutrition you can do more harm than good.  High-intensity workouts deplete our bodies of minerals and can even cause adrenal burnout. Brisk walks, bike rides, or even swimming can be even more effective than crazy workouts at the gym (plus they are more fun!)

6) We shouldn’t count calories

My rule of thumb: eat to hunger and drink to thirst.  When you are feeding your body quality, whole foods, you won’t be constantly having cravings for processed, useless food.  Counting calories just adds to stress levels!  Cut down on the junk food, add in more nutrient-dense foods, and you’ll notice results with weight, mood, sleep, and everything else.

7) Salt is essential for health!

Regular old table salt is bad for us though.  It is so processed that is really has little nutritional value and it raises blood pressure. REAL salt, on the other hand is a powerful healing tool.  Unrefined sea salt and Himalayan pink salt are examples of amazing salts that provide us with about 82 trace minerals.

8) Fat does not make you fat.

In fact, the right kinds of fats help you LOSE weight!  Good fats like coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and avocados are essential for hormone production.  Fats keep our blood sugar stable as well which is why it is great to balance carbs with fat. Both fat and cholesterol are essential for hormone production. Now does it make sense why we have such an epidemic of hormonal issues?? Low-fat diets are NOT healthy! (Especially since they tend to add more sugar to low-fat products)

9) Find your favorite superfoods!

There are TONS of foods out there that can be considered to be super and nutrient-dense. The key is to find ones that you enjoy and can also tolerate and keep them as staples in your diet. My favorites include eggs, grass-fed butter, stinging nettles, red raspberry leaf, chia seeds, beef liver (as a food or supplement), bee pollen, kombucha, broccoli, and apples. There are TONS of foods out there that are very rich in nutrients- you can rotate through them to make sure you are always getting a wide variety of nutrients. Try to aim for organic forms of these foods to get even more nutrients from them- or even better, try to grow or make them yourself!

10) Use Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

The absolute BEST way to fix our health is to get a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis.  Minerals are excreted in our hair in specific patterns which can detect trends of certain illnesses like adrenal fatigue or predict the likelihood of developing a disease like hypothyroidism, diabetes or cardiac problems.

Minerals are needed for millions of enzymes as co-factors, inhibitors or even as the enzyme themselves. Enzymes are what keeps our bodies running. When we are low on minerals, our bodies cannot physically function correctly. A hair tissue mineral test is the best way to get a huge picture on what is going on in our bodies. HTMA shows the health of the thyroid, adrenals, hormones, nervous system and cardiovascular system.

The HTMA also gives us the ratios between some of the most important nutrients, which is the key to finding individualized treatments. HTMA can detect 60 common illnesses so it truly can be an invaluable tool to getting back on the right track. HTMA gives you a personal view on what is going on in your body, and it takes a lot of the guesswork out of healing. Many people jump into natural health and create even more imbalances because they don’t even know about proper testing like HTMA.

So there you have it- my top ten nutritional healing tips!
