How to Actually Heal the Earth

I see so many people that speak about climate change and how we are ruining the Earth, but I rarely see any of them trying to make small changes in their daily lives to start helping. Start small, talk about the importance of these changes to your friends and family, and just keep fighting. There is plenty that we can do as individuals to make an impact on the environment and to help improve the health of our families despite the toxins in our environment.

Top Ways to Heal the Earth (and ourselves!)

  • Go for organic or at least non-GMO whenever you eat. Supporting local farmers is even better. No food coloring, no MSG, no artificial ingredients, no refined sugars or carbs. Non-organic and GMO foods use heavy amounts of pesticides and herbicides which are huge contributors to the poor health of our soil.
  • Ditch as much plastic and non-stick cookware as you can. Go for glass, stainless steel, and cast iron. Even some silicone is better than the non-stick junk. Recycle the plastic you do use as well, and make a conscious effort to just use LESS
  • Replace all of your household products with toxin-free products. This includes make-up, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, dish soap, window cleaners, etc. Everything that you can think of that is probably full of harsh chemicals should be on your list to replace. Most health food stores will have good choices as well. Check for more information on the chemicals to avoid and product recommendations.
  • Use the *best* water source you can. Get a filter, use spring water, or make sure your well water is free of contaminants. Read my post on how to get clean water.
  • The best way to make a difference is to not support the companies that could care less about our health and environment. So supporting small, local, organic, or fair trade businesses helps. The more people there are with natural lifestyles like this, the less “weird” it will become. Look for “green” businesses that utilize efficient energy production.
  • Don’t waste clothes! So much waste on the earth is from clothes that are just thrown out when people are done with them. Either donate or learn how to fix clothing that has ripped or become too big or small.
  • Don’t waste food! This requires meal planning, making sure that you are only making enough food for your family (or at least saving leftovers for the next day), and consuming fresh produce in a timely manner. The EPA has more tips on reducing food waste here. If you have a garden of your own, look into organic gardening and especially look into composting!
  • Look into Green Vehicles! The less gas you use, the less emissions you create. This can also save you a lot of money in the long run. There are many different options available when it comes to green vehicles, and it is the smartest move to get away from gas.
  • If you own a home, look into clean energy. Solar panels are becoming extremely popular! Many states also offer tax credits for those that install  From the EPA: “Electricity from renewable resources such as solar, geothermal, and wind generally does not contribute to climate change or local air pollution since no fuels are combusted.” Also make sure that your home is
  • Check your carbon footprint on the EPA site. This will give you a great idea on where to work the most as far as reducing the use of electricity, gas, and more.
  • When looking for new appliances like stoves, washers/dryers, and refrigerators, make sure you are looking for the ENERGY STAR! You can even find special offers and rebates for these specific products here.
  • Find more ideas from the EPA here for greener living tips. Seriously, they have SOOO many resources. If you are serious about wanting to help save the world, you have to learn how to do your part. We cannot depend on others to make these changes for us, and we can do everything we can that is in our control.
