Looking for an easy list of suggestions for your current health issues? I’m going to share some suggestions for 5 of the most common health issues we see.

Hormone Balancing for Women

Hormone balancing is one of the most common health issues we see with our HTMA clients, and it’s often the biggest complaint we hear about. Most of the information about there about hormone balancing just recommends for women to take birth control pills or progesterone to “balance” things. Neither of these actually help to balance or heal- they could help symptoms, and some women do swear by these things. But, my goal is always to help people actually heal. When you’re just suppressing symptoms you are potentially creating further issues because the underlying problems are still going on.

So for women with hormonal issues, the biggest keys are: liver healing, copper balancing, and herbs that help with specific issues. This technically goes for all women in all stages of life- there are some items that can be more specific for menopause, but ultimately we need to heal our overall foundation to be able to solve the root of your hormonal issues.

  • BioRay Liver Life– Liver Life is hands down the BEST supplement to help with liver healing.  We’ve been using it for clients for years and there is truly nothing else as strong for liver healing. Hormone balance starts in the LIVER. We need a healthy liver to balance copper correctly which is the number 1 mineral needed for women’s hormonal health.
  • Earthley’s Lunamore- This tincture is great for anyone that needs support with their cycle. It can help with weight loss, blood sugar regulation, and it can also help women that are dealing with menopause symptoms.
  • Nettle Leaf Herbal Infusions- Nettle infusions are a popular remedy for nearly everything. They are a whole body tonic and they supply much needed nutrients that many of us are depleted in. Check out my entire post about nettles here!
  • Dandelion Root Tea– Dandelion root is one of the best bile boosting herbs out there. Bile is essential for the removal of excess hormones and excess copper, as well as toxins like heavy metals and pathogens. This is a cheap, effective, and amazing way to support hormonal health. It can help with PMS, cycle related sleep issues, cramps, headaches, and more. 1-2 cups a day is perfect for most adults.
  • Earthley’s Nourish Naturally Tinctures for Him and Her– these are both incredible supports for healthy hormonal balance as well as overall wellness support.
  • Red raspberry leaf as tincture, tea, or infusion is also amazing for women’s hormonal support.
  • Herbalist and Alchemist also have amazing blends for hormonal support. Women’s Calmpound is a fave of mine, and they have blends for perimenopause and menopause. Check out all their herbal blends for women here.
  • Perfect Female Cycle Support from Perfect Supplements: This helps to support women of all ages in any stage of life- meaning that it can help with fertility, uncomfortable menstruation, AND menopause.

Hormone Balancing for Men

Women are copper dominant, but men are zinc dominant. Copper is essential for estrogen balancing and zinc is essential for testosterone and progesterone. Men are also at risk for having an imbalance with copper and zinc thanks to our modern world. We need healthy adrenals and a strong liver to balance copper and zinc. For many people, we have to balance copper FIRST before zinc normalizes since copper is a main reason why zinc levels are lower.

Overall, men can use the same basics for foundational healing: liver, gut, good nutrition, etc. But there are a few specific things that work better for men’s health.

  • ZINC is king! Zinc is needed for testosterone production, and many men are very low in zinc levels. Zinc rich foods: lamb, beef, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chickpeas, lentils, cashews, kefir, avocado, oyster; zinc supplements: Perfect Supplements ZinCerola or Earthley’s Oyster Min. Animal based zinc is more bioavailable, but if you’re dealing with gut and liver dysfunction it can be hard to absorb. Go with what feels best to you!
  • Saw Palmetto is a popular herb to use for prostate health. It’s main use is to help with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy. Because it is great for the prostate, it actually can help with preventing prostate cancer as well! Saw palmetto can help with holding onto testosterone better in the body, and it can also support the health of the male urinary system in general. You can use saw palmetto on its own, but Herb Pharm also has a tincture specific for Prostate health here.
  • We love using herbal infusions for everyone that will use them! While most of the infusions are fine for men, we have seen that oatstraw tends to fit men better than the other main herbs. Oatstraw is the infusion that is highest in magnesium and zinc, helps with detoxing heavy metals, and is amazing at healing the nervous system. Click here to read my post on herbal infusions to learn more.
  • Earthley’s Nourish Him Naturally: This awesome formula from Earthley is amazing for overall health and wellness for men. It is formulated with nutrient dense herbs that support adrenal, heart, and prostate health. This tincture can help with supporting better energy levels, better sleep, more balanced hormones, and overall better health. Check it out here!
  • H&A is another company that we LOVE, and they have an amazing line of herbal tinctures specific for men based on their needs too.

Chronic Fatigue And General Nutrition Support

Fatigue is such a vague symptom that can be related to nearly anything. Gut dysfunction, detox issues, nervous system dysfunction, low nutrients, stress- fatigue can happen for nearly any reason. Overall, when I see someone with fatigue I think “nutrient depletion”. Without crucial minerals, our bodies do not have enough energy to function. Eating enough through the day is huge too, so if you still follow old school dieting advice you and you’re EXHAUSTED all the time, it’s time to ditch the diets and eat more real food.

These suggestions are also great for those that just want to improve their nutrition too. Whether you know you have nutrient imbalances or you just want to be sure you are covering your bases, these suggestions can help. I always recommend real, natural sources of nutrients. Synthetic vitamins are cheaply made and poorly absorbed (and many companies are pharma owned, so you aren’t truly getting anything natural!).

These are all my biggest remedies for helping general chronic fatigue:

  • Nettle Infusions: Nettles are my “shining star” for many of my clients.  They help to replenish almost all of our main minerals and they are helpful for healing the adrenals.  They help to replenish energy in the body, can help with hair regrowth, gentle detox support, and more. The nettle infusions have the RDA for calcium, magnesium, and most trace minerals plus 1000mg of K per quart of the full strength- these are magic for raising many low levels at once. Herbal infusions are basically like a very strong tea- I have the instructions on how to make them in this post here.
  • Earthley’s Energy Plus: AKA Herbal Iron. This blend is amazing for those that struggle with getting their iron levels back in balance. If you have heavy periods or have an increased need for iron in pregnancy, this can help. This herbal blend has herbs that are rich in natural iron, vitamin C, and B-complex vitamins to help with proper absorption.
  • Bioray’s Adrenal Lover: Adrenal Lover is my favorite for adrenal and HPA axis support to help with energy levels and holding onto sodium and potassium better (because when our bodies are stressed, it can be hard to utilize these minerals). Adrenal Lover helps to replenish the adrenals, support the lungs and kidneys, restores creative energy, relieves exhaustion and stress, balances overactive histamine response, improves focus, and so much more.
  • Earthley’s Superfood Powder: This nourishing powder is rich in naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. It can support gut health, immune health, natural energy levels, and hormone balance.
  • Perfect Supplements Multi-Organ Supplement.  Synergistic blend of 6 organ glandulars, immune-regulating nutrients, 100% pasture raised and grass-fed.  Organ meats are the ultimate like treats like.  When you want to heal your liver, eat liver, etc.  “To round out the blend, we add to it: heart packed with CoQ10, kidney to provide tons of micronutrients, pancreas supplying natural digestive enzymes, liver a metabolic aid, spleen packed with rich iron sources, and again, the very important immune stimulating thymus.” This blend is the perfect and easiest way to get a large range of organ meats in one place.  The organs used in this formula are nutrient dense and contain a concentrated source of building blocks for hormone production and other important components that are needed for normal biological functions.

Anxiety

Anxiety for most people is a symptom of a much larger issue (or issues since many of the symptoms above can overlap). Instead of suppressing symptoms, we need to be listening to them. In order to do that we must work on healing the body as a whole. This is why I am a huge supporter of foundational care- work on the basics of health and you will be able to heal. As you heal you can learn more about why you experiences certain symptoms and what your body is trying to tell you.

The biggest root causes of anxiety are: nervous system dysfunction, mineral imbalances (almost all our main minerals play a role!), overall nutrient depletion, unresolved trauma, mold illness, and leaky gut.

These are my absolute favorite supports for chronic anxiety issues:

  • Skullcap is a popular nervous system support that can also calm the brain. It best supports those that have a racing mind and anxiety. Especially helps those that cannot sleep due to racing thoughts. I love Relax Care from Mountain Rose Herbs as it has skullcap and valerian, a great tag team for anxiety, stress, sleep, and overall calming support.
  • Lion’s Mane: This mushroom is one of the best items to use for nerve health regeneration and brain health. It can help with the immune system and with gut function as well. Great for those that want support for brain fog, memory, and learning.
  • Blue vervain helps with muscle tension, especially for those that hold tension in the head, neck, and shoulders. it can help with calming anxiety, supporting better sleep, and it is great for those that are wired and tired. Perfect for overachievers that are very hard on themselves, struggle with making boundaries, find it hard to stop working, and they might actually hate being around other people.
  • Earthley’s CBD Oil: It took me a long time to finally try CBD myself, and I cannot recommend this one enough. It’s one of the strongest supports for anxiety and panic, and there is so much science to back up this incredible remedy. The quality is what matters most with CBD, and I trust Earthley with their quality. Earthley also has this awesome guide: What You Need to Know About Cannabinoids

Sleep Issues

Everyone NEEDS sleep. It’s non-negotiable! However, it can be incredibly hard to get for many reasons. BUT I want to share some tips about how to get the best sleep of your life- because it is possible!

I see too many people looking for magic cures and ignoring basics like good sleep. So if you struggle to get a good night of rest, PLEASE make that your biggest priority! Once that improves, it’s so much easier for everything else to heal.

My favorite sleep remedies:

  • California poppy is an excellent nervine herb for anxiety, insomnia, racing mind, overthinking, and for times of intense stress. This herb can be quite relaxing, so it’s best to use at night to see how you feel with it. This is one of the best nervines for chronic pain, headaches, and similar symptoms.
  • Sleep Care Extract: Mountain Rose Herbs’ sleep blend is amazing. It has several herbs that are perfect for reducing tension and inducing relaxation.
  • Herbalist and Alchemist Phytocalm OR Tension Relief: H&A’s items are often the strongest herbal formulas. Not everyone needs such strong support, but if you find that other brands just don’t touch your sleep issues, this particular item could help. You can even mix this with some chamomile tea for an extra relaxing boost.
  • Meditate: There are MANY ways to meditate, and using this practice before bed is one of the best ways to clear your energy and calm your mind. Guided meditations are super easy, but you can also just sit and reflect on your day, color, or use breathing exercises.
  • Make Your Room Comfortable: When is the last time you really cleaned your bedroom? Or at least tidied up? The energy of your bedroom is important for getting good sleep so a dirty room can definitely influence your sleep. Keeping your room a bit cooler can also help with increasing melatonin production. Make sure TVs and computers are off. Keep your cell phone out of your room if possible. Get new comfy sheets or make sure your current ones are nice and clean (and be sure to use a good detergent with less toxins). Some even need to change their entire mattress– look for a company that doesn’t spray their mattresses with bromide or other toxic chemicals.

  1. Hi Kristin,

I am in dire need of help! I am 67 – I still feel young! I have gained so much weight since going through menopause and I can’t seem to lose it. I also have aches and pains that need to be addressed. Please help!!!

  2. Such great information written in here. You’re a plethora of knowledge. I went through menopause 9 yrs ago. I did not go on any hormone replacements thankfully. I’m grateful I listened to myself. I did use a Vitex Elixir tincture to get me thru and it was soooo helpful. My friends who started HRT back then are still suffering from hot flashes and more. I stopped getting hot flashes several yrs ago. Using natural elements to help our bodies is the way to go. Our bodies are meant to heal. Most people don’t allow their bodies to go thru their natural healing process and instead put up road blocks, which is an obvious block to the systems energy and healing power.

  3. Hey Corie! I’m so glad you found this helpful. I have seen so many issues with HRT but most women do not care to listen to the warnings- they are told they NEED the hormones, period. That there is nothing else to be done at all. And of course a doc is not going to tell them how to really heal things.

*Btw, I emailed you a few weeks ago, I’m hoping those are coming in!*

  4. Hi Kristin,

I love all this! Can you let us know which herbs are safe in pregnancy? and which sleep remedies are safe in pregnancy?

    Thanks!!

  5. Hi Kristen!
Great advice, as usual! Thank you!

What are your thoughts on when a product such as H&As Phytocalm
Has the opposite reaction intended? I’m experiencing this quite a bit lately and want to figure it out!

Thanks for any wisdom you have to offer 💕

  6. Hi Kristi!

I’m glad you liked the post 🙂 As far as having opposite reactions, it really depends on the herb and the person. Sometimes an herb just isn’t a good fit. Since Phytocalm is a blend it would be hard to pinpoint which herb is the issue, so trying single herbs that can help with calming and sleep could be a better route for you to take. My nervine post could help you find a better one- https://www.sassyholistics.com/the-best-nervine-herbs-for-sleep-anxiety-and-stress-management/

  7. Kristina L Hall

Thanks, Kristin! (That’s also a great article!) Unfortunately, I’m having that reaction with single herbs meant to be calming as well! I’m just sticking to Nettles for now 🙂
