Good fats vs Bad Fats, and why we NEED fat!
Fat is not evil
Most of you know by now that fat is not the evil thing that it has been made out to be. For years, people were told to avoid good fats like the plague and they were told to replace it with synthetic, disgusting products like margarine and canola oil. Well, thank goodness people have come back to their senses! Fat is back and here to stay- we won’t fall for the lies again.
Fat is needed for many different reasons. It is needed for brain health, reproductive health, adrenals and thyroid health, immune system health, and also for eyes, skin and nails. Saturated fats are especially good for heart health- even though for decades “experts” were saying the opposite! Fats help balance your blood sugar, especially when you cut out all of the refined and processed foods from your diet.
However, there are GOOD fats and BAD fats.
GOOD fats include: grass-fed butter, coconut oil, grass-fed dairy (cream cheese, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, heavy cream), avocado, fish, nuts, chocolate, meats, eggs, and olives.
BAD fats include: oils from soy, corn, safflower, sunflower, canola, and peanut.
So how do we get enough fat in our diet? Especially after living a low-fat life?
The easiest way is to make FAT BOMBS! Silly name, but I promise, they are amazing. I know that it can be rough to transition to eating more fat for many reasons. Some people just don’t have the time to change their routine, or they physically cannot handle fat. So making these tasty little treats can help you get your fat intake up as well as let you indulge a little.
I made a whole Pinterest board for Fat Bombs and I want to share my favorite recipes with you here. Some recipes I have found have artificial sweeteners in them- PLEASE do not use that poison! It seriously baffles me that people doing keto for weight loss are being so pro-fat and better health, but they use that junk to “sweeten” their recipes. I use maple syrup, raw honey, organic brown sugar, or even coconut sugar for my sweeteners.
My Favorite Fat Bombs:
Buttermints from Empowered Sustenance– these are super easy to make and delicious! There are a few ways to make these: butter, coconut oil and butter, or dairy free.
15 Fat Bomb Recipes– This site has both savory and sweet ideas- this is the site that I mentioned above that uses artificial sweeteners. Please don’t use that! You can easily switch it out for a REAL, nutrient dense sweetener.
And my ABSOLUTE favorite- Coconut oil Chocolate Bark from Oh She Glows- This recipe is the BEST coconut oil chocolate recipe I’ve ever tried. Seriously. The addition of almonds, hazelnuts, and shredded coconut give it such an amazing flavor as well as extra nutrition. You will be addicted! Obviously most people LOVE chocolate and I really feel like there is a reason why we crave it. (Well, several reasons: copper, magnesium, fats, antioxidants…. I think you get it!)
Don’t forget to check out the rest of the recipes I have saved on Pinterest!
