Castor Oil Packs and Why I Love Them!

Sharing is caring!

Castor oil packs changed my life! And I’m not exaggerating, I promise! After embarking on the mineral balancing journey over a year ago, I had no idea how important liver health was. I dove straight into my protocol (which attacked copper, and I was copper dumping for about 4 months straight!). I was nursing my son at the time and I was unsure about safe options for liver support so I just figured I could wait til he weaned to figure it out. (Bad idea!)

I started getting liver pains in about February nearly 2 years ago but I was under the impression that anything I did for liver health would make things worse. My worst issue was sleep- even though my son was now weaned and sleeping through the night, I was still waking up almost every hour. It was horrible! I started to dread bed time because what was the point of I couldn’t sleep?!

Enter the castor oil pack in May: wow! First night I did it I slept 9 hours straight. That was the best sleep I had gotten in almost 2 years. The next day I had 2-3 instances of copper dumping– but instead of them lasting for days they only lasted ten minutes. Clearly my liver was already more capable of handling things. Since I started the castor oil packs, I no longer have liver pain, I do not copper dump nearly as often, and my sleep has improved about 90%.

Now I know we are all different, but to me castor oil packs have been the most gentle form of detoxing and liver support that I have tried.  Most other things seem to stir up too much. It is worth a try for those struggling with liver issues and especially copper Dysregulation.

Why Use Castor Oil Packs?

So what makes castor oil packs so effective?

According to this article by Dr Mercola, castor oil packs are anti-inflammatory, antifungal, anti microbial. They help gastrointestinal disorders, help the immune system, keep the lymph system moving, they are great for muscle pains, and they also help with infertility.

Castor oil is known to help with MS, arthritis, cancer, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, all liver ailments, and detoxification.  Castor oil packs are also well-known for increasing T-cell production. They are also effective for those suffering with hormonal imbalances- everything from estrogen dominance/copper issues to infertility!

Castor oil Packs:

When making castor oil packs, the best options are to get organic, cold-presses, hexane free castor oil and to use an organic cotton flannel.

Castor oil packs-to make it as simple as I can: Get the recommended cotton flannel or an old, UN-dyed t-shirt, fold it to fit over your liver area. Then soak the entire material in castor oil, put the soaked pack over your liver and then put a small blanket, old t-shirt, rag or towel over the soaked pack to protect your clothes.

Heating pads or hot water packs are personal choice- I like to lay on my right side with the pack for about an hour and the body heat seems to work. Then relax with the pack for about an hour. You can start out slowly with it, maybe doing ten minutes the first night and slowly increasing until you get to an hour.  Now that I am used to them, sometimes I even fall asleep with them on- that does tend to stain my pajamas but I get such deep sleep!

If you want to clean your skin off, use baking soda and water.  I keep the pack in a sealed jar and add a little more oil each time, and I wash it once a month with a ton of baking soda and hot water.

For best results use at least 4 consecutive days a week. The more consistent you are with them, the more benefit you will get! You can rotate the packs around too- liver, adrenals/kidneys, thyroid, and even the colon if you have constipation.

These awesome wraps on Etsy can make things a lot easier and less messy too!

Some people claim that castor oil packs are great for soothing menstrual pain, but others claim they can increase blood flow. I personally skip the packs during that time of the month, but I leave that choice up to you!

  1. Kristin, after our first phone conversation that you told me about the castor oil packs and how they helped you in your healing journey I started to do them every night for 2 weeks. All I can say is “woww” Thanks for sharing this valuable info. 😉

    1. Hi Annie- copper dumping is when someone who embarks on the mineral balancing path starts to excrete excess unbound copper. The symptoms can vary person to person, but generally they are Anxiety, rashes, liver pain or a feeling of it being swollen, insomnia, depression, paranoia, panic attacks, loose stool or an increase in frequency (many claim it is a copper color), changes in appetite, anger, crying, hopelessness, feeling wired and tired, joint pain, and any exaggeration of current symptoms

Here is my article on copper dysregulation and how to test for it:

      1. Hello Kristen, thank you for all these wonderful articles! Just an FYI…the link above isn’t found.
Is any of this NOT recommended if you’re taking medication? I’d love to try this. Thank you!

        1. That is so weird- that was not the link I had posted! If you just go to the top of the page and search for “copper dysregulation” you will find the article.

I haven’t seen interactions with the castor packs and medication, but I would definitely look up the meds and see if there are any contraindications.

  2. Could you please clarify where to put the pad on? I have had therapists poking under my right ribs saying my liver is not working well. I have also heard that pain in the upper right side of the back is liver pain. And you say you are lying on your right side. So it is obviously on the right side, but where should the pad be for maximum effect?

    1. Yes the liver is under the right side of the rib cage. There is “referred pain” where you can feel the pain from the liver/gallbladder is the right shoulder or upper back, just like when someone has heart pain their left arm hurts. For liver healing properties, the best place is under the right rib cage on the abdomen. Hope that helps! You can google “liver location” to see where it is too to get a better idea 🙂

  3. Hi Kristin! Finally started my castor oil pack (Liver area) starting slow at 15 min. for 4 consecutive days then will add more time each week. My query is; how many weeks do we do this for each area as I would also like to do my kidneys and my left breast that has a cyst 🙂 Thank-you!

    1. Hi Michelle! You can definitely rotate them if you want to use them on your kidneys and breast, no need to wait a certain amount of time. I have seen some sites that say to do them over the liver for 4 days, and then the other 3 use them elsewhere!

  4. Good (late,) morning from Scotland.
Would these packs be advisable for a man, in his early 50s, currently undergoing chemo therapy – his choice, as it MUST be – for stage 4, prostate cancer which has spread to his pelvic bone &, at least, one lymph node.

The oncologist has diagnosed the cancer as treatable but non curably so. He has, so far, had two doses of chemo which have left him less than a shadow of the man he was even immediately prior to the first chemo treatment.

Because he took a bad reaction to the first dose, he had to be put on antihistamines & future dosing is to be done over a period if 3 to 4 hours rather than over the usual 1 hr. He is also on large doses of steroids so his immune system is seriously reduced in power: negated really.

His son, my oldest grandson, a 14yr old high school lad is scared to go see his daddy for fear of, unwittingly, carrying some of the many bugs doing the rounds at his school & the community in general. He, the patient, is not permitted, by the medics, to take even vitamin C.

We, his family would have preferred he opt for a non chemo, natural anti cancer therapy but it is not our lives, therefore, not our right to make such decision.

After this “comment”, I will be purchasing the castor oil, via your link, if available for shipping to the UK, in order to commence pack treatment on my own body. I will let you know the results, if any.

Thank you for taking time to help others.
    Maggie 🤗

    1. Hello Margaret! I am sorry to hear that someone in your life is going through this cancer journey. I truly am not sure about the safety of castor oil packs for someone dealing with this though. I definitely encourage you to research more on that though and see if you can find more information!

I do hope that they help YOU out though, as they are a very amazing remedy for many of my clients and followers <3
