Reducing Environmental Toxins: What to Switch out!

Reducing environmental toxins can be a daunting task once you realize how many horrible chemicals are in the typical things we use daily around the house.  Baby steps is always best for this though: either pick one room a month to “detox” or do one item at a time. This list is just going to give you an idea on the things that you might want to change as time goes on.

When I first learned about the toxins in our household items, I went a bit overboard and threw EVERYTHING out at once. Makeup, cleaners, shampoo, etc- I got rid of it all in a day. I realize that not everyone can do that, and it’s made me a big proponent of slowly making changes. We’ve been using various brands of things over the last several years, but now we are switching everything over to Poofy Organics. I am so tired of having to read labels still on products that claim they are “natural” or “organic”. Poofy Organics has been one of the few brands that I have actually been able to trust 100% with their quality.  And I am SO picky with what I use and promote- this is one of the few companies that I really feel good about using and telling others about.

I hope this list helps! I think it helps to have it all in one place so you can figure out if you are missing anything (especially if you are someone sensitive to rashes or reactions from chemicals and can’t figure out where toxins might be lurking).

If you want to read more about the WHY behind switching these out, check out my article here on some of the most toxic chemicals that we come into contact with on a daily basis. We cannot eliminate or avoid everything bad out there- but there is a lot that we *can* control.

Kitchen

  • Dish Soap
  • Dishwasher Liquid
  • All-Purpose Cleaner
  • Candles or air fresheners
  • **I use a mix of half white vinegar/half water in a spray bottle for my all-purpose cleaner. To make it smell nice and add some more cleaning properties I soak lemon and lime peels in a jar of white vinegar for a few days, strain the vinegar out, and then mix that with the half bottle of water (measurements depend on your bottle size!). I use this for counters, tables, the kitchen sink, and other miscellaneous cleaning. I also use Dr. Bronner’s soap at times for cleaning floors or using as dish soap (I dilute it for these purposes though).

Bathroom

Bedroom

  • Mattress
  • Bedding
  • Pillows
  • Kids’ pajamas- some companies still use flame retardant on them, so be on the lookout for that. Most of the time you will see a warning now that says “make sure PJs are tight fitting as these don’t contain flame retardant.

Other household items:

  • Floor cleaner (whether hard wood or carpet)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Dryer sheets
  • Fabric Softener
  • Sunscreen
  • EMFs from computers, cell phones, TVs, etc.
  • Other furniture: couches especially are a huge source of bromides- many companies are no longer using thing, but it is always worth looking into when you are ready to buy new furniture.

Natural Dental Care

The state of our teeth can be a pretty good representation of our health. Many people deal with cracking teeth, cavities, sensitivity of the teeth and gums, and more. Most of us have been taught about the external care of teeth which just includes brushing and flossing- but there is SO much more to healthy teeth than that!

My Top Tips for Improving Dental Health

There are many things you can do to improve the health of your teeth. Luckily, most of these will sound familiar to many of my readers!

Balance minerals

Minerals play a VERY big role in dental health. Our enamel is the most mineralized substance of the body: 96% of the enamel is pure mineral! (source). Using HTMA can help determine where your mineral imbalances are so we can see what we need to focus on first.

Use cell salts

Cell salts are homeopathic remedies made from minerals. They help your body utilize minerals better, unlike supplements that just add a huge amount.  Cell salts are gentle, safe, and very effective. The calcium cells salts are best for bone and dental health: Calc fluor, calc phos, and calc sulph. You can try the cell salts individually or go for a blend of them like this Bioplasma.

Ditch the fluoride

Most people know fluoride as the stuff put in toothpaste to give us strong teeth. It’s also put in our water supply because it is supposedly so amazing at preventing cavities. There is a huge difference between naturally occurring fluoride and the sodium fluoride that is thrown in our water. For one, the former is natural and in small amounts in food and water and the latter is a synthetic form that is toxic waste. Harvard University declared a few years ago that sodium fluoride was actually a neurotoxin, meaning that it destructive to nerve tissue. The study from Harvard focused mostly on the effect that fluoride has on children.

The worst offenders for this added, toxic fluoride are water and toothpaste. Look for water filters that get the fluoride out (like Berkey or Tapmaster) or look here for other ways to make sure you get clean water. The toothpaste we will talk about below!

Use a better toothpaste

As mentioned above, most toothpaste is going to have that toxic form of fluoride in it, and it is usually filled with other nasty ingredients. Sticking to a natural form of toothpaste is best for our dental health. You can make your own with coconut oil and baking soda, or you can go with other awesome options like Poofy Organics. We use the Toddler toothpaste for our son, and the tooth powder for ourselves (which is amazing! Tooth powder might sound weird, but I promise that you will see the difference in your teeth with this.). They also have an awesome mouth rinse that helps combat plaque and bad breath: see all of these here!

Use Cod liver oil

Fat soluble vitamins are a crucial part to our overall health. There has been so much misinformation about Vitamin over the last several decades, but now people are going crazy over vitamin D supplements. In truth, we need BOTH of these vitamins. But they need to be in a proper balance! Cod liver oil gives us this perfect balance of vitamins A and D. I do not advocate for fermented cod liver oil- if you use it and it works for you, great. But I never could get myself to actually try it as my gut was telling me something was “off” about it- and once this report came out a year or so ago about how it is rancid and not as nutrient dense as it is claimed.

My favorite cod liver oils are NutraPro and Rosita’s. NutraPro has the best value of any other natural cod liver oil I’ve found (and I’ve done a lot of digging just to find the cod liver oils that don’t add synthetic nutrients- it is horrible but MANY of the brands of CLO out there add synthetic A and D!). You can read my full breakdown on the benefits of CLO here, and my comparison of NutraPro and Rosita’s. Or you can find them both on Perfect Supplements’ site, where you can save 10% with my code SASSY at checkout! They also have ghee and high vitamin butter oil which can provide K2 for added absorption of A and D.

We also need healthy livers to utilize both A and D. This is why liver support is so crucial for healing! We need these fat soluble vitamins, but we cannot use them properly with sluggish livers.

Drink Bone Broth and herbal infusions

Bone broth is one of the most powerful healing tools in the natural healing world. Broth provides highly bio-available nutrients, helps to heal and seal the gut lining, and can be a great source of energy. Beef bone broth tends to be the more nutrient dense option but chicken bone broth can be easier and just as helpful. You can find some ideas for recipes here on my friend Renee’s site, Raising Generation Nourished!

Herbal infusions are also powerful for healing. They are extremely nutrient dense, and since they are also liquid they supply extremely bio-available minerals to the body. Nettles and oatstraw tend to be my top choices for the most nutrient-dense infusions. You can read about how to make infusions, where to find the herbs, and what they are all used for here.

Use powdered eggshells

I know what you are thinking, what in the world would we use with powdered eggshells?? Eggshells are extremely mineral rich, especially with calcium. You can crush or grind the shell of your eggs after you boil them and let them dry. You can add this powder to your toothpaste to give it a boost of minerals!

Oil pulling

Oil pulling is something many people have been raving about over the last few years. It is an Ayurvedic practice that helps to detox your mouth of any bad bacteria that could be lingering in there. You basically just swish an oil (coconut, sesame, or even olive) in your mouth for about 10 minutes each day, and then spit the oil out once you are done (preferably in the garbage and not down a drain). You can read a bit more on this here. I’ve also heard of people swishing with wheat grass juice too to help remineralize the teeth even further.

And finally, try to find a holistic dentist.

There are a lot of dentists out there that are either realizing the harm that mercury amalgams and fluoride have caused, or they already have known this for years. Many of them will be able to fully assess your dental issues and come up with more ideas to help you heal. You can find a holistic dentist near you with Holistic Dental’s website.

toxin-free sunscreen

Ahhh, summer. Sometimes there is nothing better than being out in the bright, warm sun on a summer day. Especially after many months of the cold!

But here comes the controversial arguments: what sunscreen do you use? Do you even use sunscreen? Are you afraid of the sun (like we’ve been conditioned to for decades)?

Well, here is my take on this topic!

We need sunlight for our health!

The sun helps us create vitamin D, can combat depression, helps to regulate our circadian rhythm, actually protects us against certain cancers, kills bad bacteria (and can help with eradicating internal pathogens!), lowers cholesterol (because it allows us to use it for hormone creation), lowers blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, and more. (source) What a list of benefits! No wonder why we’ve been taught to fear the sun- it is such a natural healer of many things! And you know how “health care” is truly all about keeping us sick.

Have you been told you have a vitamin D deficiency and are being told to take oral vitamin D? PLEASE read this article of mine about how to really raise vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a hormone, not something we are meant to consume orally. We CANNOT bottle sunshine!

So what is Smart Sun exposure?

The sun is NOT our enemy. But we have to be smart about sun exposure. If you are going to be outside for 10 minutes, you’ll likely be OK to just soak in the rays for a bit. In fact, most people only really need about 10-15 minutes of direct exposure to make enough vitamin D for the day. You only need enough exposure to make your skin a little pink.  Your skin can only absorb so much at once, which is why people burn- that means you have gone over your limit! Some say the best time to get sun is between 10AM and 2PM. This is when UVB rays are more powerful so you wouldn’t need to sit out as long to get your appropriate shade of pink.

If you’re going to be out for HOURS at the beach, then you will definitely need some protection. There are so many options out there now for staying safe in the sun: clothes with SPF protection, hats, sunglasses, and of course, toxin free sunscreen.

My TOP choice for sunscreen is THE Sunscreen from Poofy Organics.  They offer a typical lotion type or even a stick for easy face application. Both have an SPF of 30.  Poofy also has tanning oil, after sun spray, hand sanitizer, and bug spray as well, which you can check out here!

Poofy’s sunscreen is free of: Para amino benzoic acid… Octyl salicyclate… Avobenzone… Oxybenzone… Cinoxate… Padimate O… Dioxybenzone… Phenylbenzimidazole… Homosalate… Sulisobenzone… Menthyl anthranilate… Trolamine salicyclate… Octocrylene.

Their ingredients include: Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Unrefined Shea Butter, Organic Beeswax, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic Camellia Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, NON-NANO, NON-Micronized Zinc Oxide, Organic Rosemary Extract.

The Environmental Working Group puts out a list each year that shows the best and worst sunscreens (it’s not out for this year yet, but both of Poofy’s sunscreen options have a nice low score of 1 on their chart!). You can sign up through their site to get an email once the 2017 list is up if you want to learn the rest of the best sunscreens to choose!

Toxic Candles: Do you know the truth about popular candle brands?

toxic candles

Do you know the toxic truth about candles?

If you don’t know already, most of the popular candle brands use toxic ingredients that can be carcinogenic. Most candles are made of paraffin, which is a petroleum waste product- when it burns, it lets off the same chemicals as diesel gas. On top of that, they add synthetic fragrances that are also terrible for our health. So candles might seem innocent, but they are just another thing that is in our environment that can cause us health issues.

Biggest issues with popular candles:

  1. Can emit lead when burning if the core is lead based (source)
  2. Carcinogenic soot from paraffin wax candles (source)
  3. They produce similar chemicals to cigarette smoke (source)
  4. Increase indoor pollution, especially because of the synthetic fragrances (source)
  5. Increase risk of asthma, eczema, and skin complaints (source)
  6. Plus: once you start cleaning up your life, you can just start to FEEL the toxic effect of things like candles. The smell can become unbearable!

So what do I recommend for Cleaner Candles?

1)Poofy Organics also has awesome candle melts made from coconut wax and essential oils. They have the BEST quality candle alternatives that I have ever seen. Another great thing about candle melts is that you get to find cute wax warmers like this one, or this dragon one if you’re fancy like that!

Some of their popular scents include:

  • Island Getaway
  • Pest Protector (great for summertime!)
  • Spirited Mint

You can see all of the candle melts Poofy offers here!

2)When I first researched this issue, I found Root Candles. Root Candles use 100% pure beeswax and natural essential oils for their candles. They have both beeswax and soy blends for their candles, they use essential oils for their fragrances, they have cotton wicks, and some of their candles have an 80 hour burn time. I’ve used about 5 or so of their candles, and I love them! Root has interesting scents like Tiramisu or traditional scents like English Lavender, so you won’t be missing those usual unique scents that would be from a more toxic brand.

Avoiding all environmental toxins is a hard thing to do, but it is our responsibility to do what we can to fix what we CAN control. We vote with our dollars as well: if we stop buying from these huge companies that care more for profit than our health, then slowly things will continue to change and we’ll have even more better options.

5 Reasons to love Poofy Organics!

Most parents these days are becoming aware of the crazy amount of toxic chemicals used in everyday products, even ones that are used in the few few hours of life on newborns! It can be so hard to find products that are truly all natural because so many companies are still not being transparent when it comes to their labels.

This is where Poofy Organics comes in. They offer so many amazing products for babies, toddlers, and even for mama! As an independent guide for Poofy, I truly love and recommend them to everyone.

Some of the best things that Poofy offers are:

  • Cradle Cap Relief lotion
  • Unscented Lotion for Baby
  • “Happy Tush” Diaper Cream
  • “Happy Boobies Nipple Cream”
  • Sleepy Sleep bubble bath

Poofy Organics is my go-to for the best cosmetics now! I went make-up free for years once I learned about the toxic ingredients that most make-up uses, and could never find a truly all-natural replacement so I gave up. But when I signed up to be an independent guie with Poofy last summer, I was so excited to try their beauty products!

I’m absolutely in love with what Poofy offers. So far I have some of their eyeshadow and one of their mascaras. I was so happy that they were just as amazing as I though they would be. With popular mascara brands, I would always feel my eyes burn for awhile after I put it on (which I should have seen as a red flag back then, duh!). But Poofy’s mascara is not the same! It still makes lashes stand out quite a bit, it lasts all day, and there is no side effects like other brands.

Check out all of their awesome options here.

They have lip glosses/sticks/balms, eyeliner, mascara, nail polish (my favorite is Mama Mia!), concealer, blush, and more. They have everything you need to make the switch to a truly organic cosmetic line and reduce your environmental toxins.

toxins to avoid

Do you know what is in your deodorant? (Hint: It’s likely not something good!)

I am a big proponent for reducing the environmental toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Making baby steps is great, and usually the first step people take is to switch out their person care products. Deodorant is definitely a big one to change as it gets applied right onto our lymph nodes and there are so many known toxins in most conventional deodorants. Let’s go over the main things you need to avoid, and what our options are!

Toxins to Avoid in Deodorant

  1. Aluminum:Aluminum toxicity is most commonly related to Alzheimer’s disease, but it is also involved in ALS, Parkinson’s, kidney and liver dysfunction, dental cavities, anemia, and peptic ulcers. Aluminum can also be passed from the mother to their unborn baby in the womb.
  2. Parabens:One of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics. You may actually be seeing now that some products claim to be “paraben free!” on their labels. Parabens are easily absorbed into your skin and they are known to mimic estrogen! There is a strong link between parabens and breast cancer because of the effects it has on humans. (source)
  3. Propylene Glycol: This is part of a group called PEGs, which are known carcinogens. You’ll see propylene glycol in anti-freeze, to cake, to beauty products. Yes you read that right: an ingredient used in anti-freeze is also found in food!
  4. Triclosan: A common anti-bacterial used in many products, but it has been proven to not only be ineffective but unsafe. Triclosan can actually make some bacteria resistant to antibiotics. (source)

So What Deodorants can we switch to?

  • I went on a wild goose chase for years to find the best deodorant. Nearly every deodorant that we tried either didn’t work well or it gave us a bad reaction, or we realized that it still had questionable ingredients. We use Poofy Organics now, and we’re never going back! Poofy has many scents to choose from, plus they have a sensitive DEO, as well as some powders or sprays!
  • Some do fine with magnesium oil or even milk of magnesia. I don’t recommend this for those that are trying to limit magnesium due to adrenal exhaustion though.
  • Make your own! Most recipes will involve baking soda, coconut oil, and some essential oils.
  • The other major brand I’ve heard great things about is Primal Pit Paste, which you can find in most health food stores at this point.
  • Take a look on the Skin Deep Guide on the Environmental Working Group’s website to see how your current deodorant ranks and find other options. They have about 60,000 total products listed!

Who doesn’t love essential oils?! I’ve never been a huge fan of the big MLM essential oil companies, mostly because I do NOT agree with ingesting oils. Some of the information out there about oils is absolutely terrible. I would only recommend ingesting essential oils under the supervision of a TRAINED aromatherapist (I highly recommend Learningabouteos.com to learn more about essential oils). Because of this dangerous info, I refuse to support those big companies and I’m so glad that Poofy has great information on safe essential oil use.

One thing I love is that they have a guide on how to properly dilute the essential oils. Using oils neat on the skin can actually lead to chemical burns or even create an allergic reaction after a certain amounts of time (not always on the first use, but it can happen with frequent use) (source)

Some of the most popular blends (that already have a carrier oil) that Poofy has include: essential oils

When you think of nail polish, what is the first thing to come to your mind? The SMELL, right? Some people just accept that smell as normal, but it’s just another sign of the toxins in our everyday environment. It is a scary thought that we can absorb about 60% of the chemicals that we put on our skin. Considering that the average woman can use nearly 500 chemicals just in her morning routine, it is no wonder that these toxins can build up and wreak havoc.

So what are the main offenders to avoid in Nail Polish?

*Toluene- A human reproductive toxin.
*Formaldehyde- A known carcinogen, plus they pickle dead bodies in it. YUCK!
*Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)- Known to cause infertility, uterine cancer, testicular cancer & fetal defects.
*Camphor – Poisonous & can cause liver damage.

Poofy Organics offers the BEST nail polish that does not have any of these major toxins!

Just look at all of these choices for colors! I actually went to the Poofy Organics store recently and it was so cool to see this whole selection of colors. I ended up picking Mamma Mia (middle of the second row). I’m very impressed with their polish. It has a slight nail polish scent but it doesn’t linger, nor is it headache inducing like other popular brands of polish. The color is great and definitely can withstand quite a bit (doing dishes, etc) and it dries pretty quickly.

Want to take a closer look at these colors? Check them out here! Don’t forget to check out the toxin free nail polish remover too. It has NO smell, and the ingredients all have a rating of ZERO on the EWG site.

It’s easy to start reducing your toxin load with Poofy, whether it is one step at a time or all at once!
